Gillo Pontecorvo wirft einen düsteren Blick auf die Rücksichtslosigkeit und Verbrechen des europäischen Kolonialismus. Das Karibik-Flair der idyllischen Insel kontrastiert drastisch mit den grausamen Gewaltakten gegen die aufständische Bevölkerung. Und Ennio Morricones Musik verleiht dem Ganzen eine surreale Note.

Marlon Brando plays Sir William Walker, a shrewd manipulator who, sometime in the middle of the 19th century, instigates a slave revolt on an idyllic Antilles island on behalf of the British crown. The British want to bring the island under their influence so that they can do business with sugar instead of the Portuguese. 10 years later, Walker becomes a military advisor to an unsuccessful general who wants to use him to destroy the guerrillas who have been robbed of the fruits of their struggle.
Gillo Pontecorvo takes a gloomy look at the ruthlessness and crimes of European colonialism. The Caribbean flair of the idyllic island contrasts drastically with the cruel acts of violence against the rebellious population. And Ennio Morricone's music lends the whole thing a surreal touch.
